What is the Alexander Technique?
In a nutshell, Frederick Matthias Alexander was an actor, equestrian, public speaker, among other things. As an actor, he noticed that whenever he spoke during a play, over time his voice would get hoarse and sore. He went to several doctors to try and figure out what was causing this. The doctors couldn’t find anything wrong medically with F.M. and so he said that he’d have to figure it out for himself. One day, he stood in front of a mirror and watched himself perform a speech. He noticed that every time he would go to speak, he would force his neck forward, jutting his chin out and his body would be over his center. Over time, he asked himself the question, ‘well what if I don’t do that?’ (not an exact quote). Little by little and with experimentation on himself, he developed this technique of efficient and effective use of his self. And thus, the Alexander Technique was born.
He taught the technique to many people, including children. He was even invited by doctors to travel to London to work with some of their patients. The results were amazing and although this technique is not based in medical science, it provides health benefits.
This technique can be used by anyone in the world. We work hard at our jobs and we develop stress and carry it in our bodies. This technique is designed to release that stress and tension. With practical and conscious use, it will help you in the long run. Better posture, better alignment, less pain, better breathing, clearer thinking, ease of movement, a calm and centered self. Try out the technique for yourself and see how it can work for you, like it did for F.M. Alexander.
